History

The International Salsa Festival Augsburg, known as the Jähriges Jubiläum, was founded in 2009 by a passionate group of salsa enthusiasts in Augsburg, Germany. The inaugural event took place at the Stadthalle Gersthofen, attracting around 40 participants eager to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of salsa dancing. This festival was designed to celebrate the joy of salsa, bringing together dancers of all skill levels to learn from renowned instructors and enjoy exhilarating performances. The festival quickly gained traction, establishing itself as a key event in the local and international salsa calendar.

Over the years, the festival evolved significantly, transitioning from a small local gathering to a prominent regional event. By 2010, the festival had expanded to include three nights of nonstop parties and workshops, featuring esteemed dancers and choreographers from around the globe, such as Luis Vasquez and Melissa Fernandez. The venue also shifted to the more spacious Parktheater im Kurhaus Augsburg-Göggingen, allowing for a larger audience and more extensive programming. Each subsequent edition saw increased attendance, with participants coming from various countries to partake in the festivities.

Notable editions of the festival include the 2012 event, which marked the fourth edition and showcased a variety of workshops and performances, culminating in a grand gala evening. The festival continued to thrive, with the 2016 edition featuring international workshops and a gala show that highlighted the best of salsa talent. However, the festival faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to postponements in 2020 and 2021. Despite these setbacks, the festival's commitment to the salsa community remained strong, with plans to resume in 2022 and beyond.

Today, the International Salsa Festival Augsburg stands as a testament to the enduring passion for salsa and Latin dance. It has become a significant cultural event in Augsburg, celebrated for its inclusive atmosphere and high-quality programming. The festival not only promotes dance but also fosters connections among salsa enthusiasts, making it a cherished highlight in the annual calendar for both local and international participants.
