It aims to foster a vibrant salsa community in the region.
History
The Montreal Salsa Convention (MSC) was founded in 2005 by Sonia and Moris from the San Tropez Dance School, aiming to celebrate and promote the vibrant salsa culture in Montreal, Canada. The inaugural event took place at the Holiday Inn Midtown and Metropolis, attracting approximately 40 participants and featuring a diverse lineup of international instructors and performers. This event was designed to bring together salsa enthusiasts from various backgrounds, fostering a sense of community and passion for Latin dance.
Over the years, the Montreal Salsa Convention has evolved significantly, growing from a small local gathering into a major international event. By 2008, the convention had expanded to include multiple venues, such as the Metropolis and Sheraton Center, and saw increased attendance, with hundreds of dancers participating in workshops, performances, and social dancing. The format of the convention has also diversified, incorporating competitions, live music, and a variety of workshops led by renowned instructors from around the world.
Notable editions of the MSC include the 10th anniversary celebration in 2015, which highlighted a decade of salsa in Montreal with exceptional performances and a vibrant atmosphere. The 2018 edition featured a diverse lineup of international artists, including Alex & Desiree and Tito & Tamara, and continued to showcase the best of Latin dance. The convention has consistently attracted top talent, including legendary figures like Eddie Torres and Griselle Ponce, further solidifying its reputation as a premier salsa event.
Despite facing challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the postponement of the 2020 and 2021 editions, the Montreal Salsa Convention has remained resilient. The event returned in 2022 with renewed enthusiasm, featuring over 30 workshops, live shows, and social dancing until the early hours of the morning. Today, the MSC stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of salsa and Latin dance, continuing to inspire and unite dancers from around the globe in the heart of Montreal.
